60 seconds with Jenn Ng…
1. Tell us about your RTO and what sets it apart?
Centacare Employment and Training (Centacare) is a not-for-profit RTO that offers programs, training courses and support services with the mission to break the cycle of adversity and create opportunities for a brighter future. We serve the disadvantaged members of the community who are looking to learn new skills or obtain the qualifications necessary to go on to further study, training or employment.
2. Describe your role in one sentence:
As the marketing coordinator, my role consists of overseeing promotional campaigns across our organisation, and ensure our messaging reflects what we do at Centacare.
3. What got you into the training industry?
When I was reevaluating my career path, I was determined to seek out an organisation that most aligned with my values. I was drawn to work at Centacare due to the organisation’s mission and what they have set out to achieve within our community. I wanted to help clients to see the potential in a rewarding career pathway and hopefully achieve something great in the long term.
4. What is the best part of the work you do?
I get to have a direct positive impact not just for our clients, but also for Centacare. Best of all, I have the incredible opportunity to work with a team of dedicated staff who shares common philanthropic views as I do.
5. What challenges have you and your business faced and overcome?
The biggest challenge we faced this year would be during the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Like many others, our daily operations were affected by the pandemic, which resulted in the closure of our sites. With the determination and hard work from the Centacare staff, we have efficiently allowed for remote learning for our clients and accelerated to the digital adoption in our course delivery during the imposed safety restrictions. We made sure our organisation remained versatile during the volatile environment and stayed at the forefront of the RTO space as a leading provider.
6. What is your proudest achievement for whilst working at your RTO?
I play an active role in ensuring Centacare continues to engage with our communities and remains prevalent on our online platforms. I have also successfully completed the annual report and reflecting on our organisation’s past performance.
7. When you were a student the person who inspired you most was and why…
The person who inspired me the most was Oprah Winfrey. She is famously known for being the first female, African American talk show host in history, but, before becoming one of the most influential women on earth, she had endured hardships. Despite growing up poor and being knocked back multiple times due to her racial identity, she did not let the labels define her and believed in herself. Her story had taught me that we are not limited by our circumstances. She inspired me to not be held back by fears and self-doubts and instead, push past fear to find my purpose throughout my studies and into my work decisions.
8. What’s the best piece of advice you give to students / what is your favourite saying?
Be actively curious and become a more effective learner. Try relating new information to the things that you already know and don’t assume you everything.
9. If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting out as a training professional, what would it be?
Focus on being kind and generous with your time by offering your skills, advice, and service to others.
‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’ – Winston Churchill
10. How do you think online assessment is revolutionising the Australian VET industry?
As technology becomes more prevalent in our education, online assessment will become a crucial tool in the VET industry as it introduces efficiency and personalised learning. It provides a platform for students and teachers to be interactive and receives ongoing feedback at any given time. More importantly, it offers ease of access to learning materials.
11. What would you say to someone thinking about implementing Cloud Assess?
Try it out! It may be the training and assessment solution you are looking for.
12. Describe Cloud Assess in 3 words:
Efficient, flexible and reliable.
